I gave back the exam scripts and results form the exam earlier in the week. That was a reality check for students and for me.

Students worked away on the various exercises we had been doing. Most did tables of timetables. A few students struggled because they missed some classes.

Some were a bit frustrated that I didn't help them more. But the flip-side of having recordings the classes online is that students have to take responsibility themselves for catching up. I'm not going to fill in the blanks for them.

In today's class we didn't look at anything new. Students used the time to catch up on the exercises. I wanted to pause a little today to give people a chance get on top of things. Some students have yet to get with the program. I don't think the rest of us can wait for them much longer.

Students who had everything done checked that the random numbers weren't skewed. They modified their code to use floor instead of round.

"Teaching Naked" video

During the week I recorded the audio for a short video I am making on "Teaching Naked". I had tried to record it at home at the weekend but the house was to noisy.

When I started recording in my office I couldn't believe just how much noise there was. I couldn't, as you might think, hear the DJ Society doing it's thing 20m away, but I could hear all sorts of ambient noise. My desk is constantly vibrating, but I don't feel or hear it. My computer hums gently. As soon as I turned on the mic I could hear all these hidden sounds.

Audicity, like a lot of audio editing programs, has a fantastic noise reduction feature. You select a sample of "silence" and it analyses the noise. You can then subtract noise with those characteristics from the recording. It only works for structured noise, like a fan, or a hum. It won't work for people passing the the hall for example, or slamming doors. It if so impressive though I suspect I could record something on a plane and it would be fine.

A buddy of mine in Portugal is going to illustrate the video for me, if he has time. If not I'll have to do it myself.

Some students need to take a look at the New Orleans example again and really understand it before attempting the various exercises involving random images. Don't forget the discussion we had about randomness. Some students have unwittingly written code that has stacked the dice or deck. Those kinds of things could have gotten you shot in the wild west, if they'd had JavaScript :-)

There is a lot of interesting variety in the code being written to complete the euro change exercise. It's really worth thinking about the logic before writing the code. I've see a lot of code that is more complex than it needs to be. There is no need for nested loops. And if you think about it, what's the maximum number of 50c coins you will display. The solutions involving mod and integer division are clever, but brave.

Beware of intelligent quotes when copying and pasting. They have different ASCII values from regular double quotes and will break your code.

I connected my blog and my Google+ account today. Now I can write a blog post as usual and share it with the relevant people in Google+. That's handy because I was more or less putting the same information in both. I want to keep both on the go at the same time. I want to build the audience for one, but keep the audience for the old. I'll be curious to see which students prefer In G+ students see only what's relevant to them. On the blog they can see everything, unless they click on the appropriate label.

I was all set today to start uploading my classes to iTunes you. Two years ago I setup of a podcast server. I had imagined that the latest version would be a huge improvemen on the previous one, but it's still very clunky. I held off publishing classes so far this semester in anticipation of submitting them to the automated server. But if the pieces don't fall into place soon I must have to manually type the RSS feed myself. That's pointless donkey work.

I Apple plans to sell an iPad to every student and wants lecturers' to be the draw it is going to have to take the server side part of the equation. Using the server product it is hard to believe it's from the same company that makes iPods. The list of things I would fix if I was in charge is too long for me to start on.

On a positive note, Google+ is working out well for be so far. The ease with which I can publish a video is amazing (take note Apple). There hasn't been too much interaction with students on G+ yet, at least not with me. They may be interacting with each other, but I don't think so. I think the social element of education technology is often ignored. That's why I think something like G+ or FaceBook is the way to go.

We had our first class today. As a card carrying nerd I think I am probably already familiar with a lot of the technology we will use. But I have very little experience of Blackboard and there's a new version of it now anyway.

I'm actually interested in the big picture and the theory. I need some context for my skills. I have a tendency to go in full guns blazing with technology rather than considering the objectives and the theory behind what I'm trying to do.

Early indications suggest, however, that this will be a very technical module. So I'll be in my element. But perhaps what I need is to be out Of my element, and work out of my comfort zone. We shall see.

We had our first class today. Interesting enough stuff. It's nice to actually take time to think about what you are doing and where it fits in to the big picture.

This module is about designing modules. For the assignment we must come up with a topic and design a module for it. The lecturer said it will be more interesting if we design a module that is to be taught to students from different backgrounds, different disciplines, or a combination of full-time and part-time students.

I wrote a few free modules in the past, in fact I even worked on a whole programme. But I think it might be more interesting to start a new one rather than improve one I wrote before. I would be nice to take something from the idea all the way to the finished module.

I have two ideas so far.

The first is a sort of leadership & personal development type module. It would have some CIT module type things in it. Students could get 5 additional credits by completing projects and volunteering and stuff. It's all a bit vague still, I know. But imagine a computing students volunteers once a week for 8 weeks at CoderDojo for example. That should would get 1 credit for that. On completion of 5 such projects, they would get the module. The students would propose their own projects and lecturers would sign-off on them. I'm thinking something along the lines of the Gaisce President's Awards, or the Prince's Trust type of thing.

The second module is Green IT. That's a bit more conventional, but would be interesting too.

Since this was our first class it was a bit strange having a lab when we never had a lecture. So it was mostly a typing exercise.

I gave out two JavaScript examples and asked students to type them up in notepad. That'll save time in the next class.

I asked students to set up dropbox folders for their class for this work and to share it with me (ideally read-only). This would allow me to monitor student progress continuously and to very quickly spot problems and offer help. It does raise some privacy issues too. IUT Lannion Lecture

I gave a class remotely at IUT Lannion this morning. It was quite a strange experience, sitting at my desk giving a lecture. I've recorded lectures for later use before. But giving one live felt a bit weird to me. This was compounded by not being able to see the audience, and not knowing what they were seeing.

The folks at IUT called to say it worked fine. It was certainly an interesting experience.

I meant to record it, but something went wrong. But that anything worked at all was impressive.

I guess it's a sign of things to come. Perhaps some day I'll be giving my lectures from a beach somewhere.

The concept of conjecture and proof are fundamental to mathematics. This section develops these from a historical viewpoint with emphasis on elementary mathematics (e.g. primes and geometry).

Illustrate how lots of everyday life occurrences can be analysed via probability. Examples include games, National lottery, betting/gambling.

· Applications
The power of mathematics is in its practical application to science, engineering and the world of business. This section uses a variety of examples to highlight this.

On the day of the game demonstrations I didn’t get a proper chance to say goodbye to you all. After so much time and work together it seemed strange for us all to walk off and go about our business.

I was very impressed with the standard of the projects. There was a lot of imagination and enthusiasm in evidence on the day. Thanks for taking the work so seriously and for putting so much effort into it. My phone is old and slow. It would really help me if your group e-mailed me the URLs that your project used. So if someone from your group could do that, it would help me fully appreciate your efforts.

I am still correcting continuous assessment components for the module and I’m confident now that you won’t get any results for this module before you get all your results in the new year. So they will all come together.

Eventually you will be able to see the mark for your essay in turnitin. Once I have them all corrected I will take a second look at them. So marks may appear to go up or down a tiny bit. I’ll e-mail you again once they are done.

There’s no update on the free choice options for next semester. So that’s going to be a bit of a disaster. If you see some thing offered by another department that you are half interested in, take it. You will probably get an e-mail from the registrar’s office about your free choice module some time in the new year.

If you had a Finish team member please send me an e-mail about the extent of his or her involvement, so that I can calculate your bonus marks for that. Unless it is already detailed in the project documentation you handed up. If you had a French team member, that’s all sorted.

I have disabled anonymous comments for this blog. I had believed that allowing students to post anonymously would allow for a free-er exchange of ideas, but that turned out not to be the case. I was very disappointed with the tone and character of the comments that were left. I think I may have done students a disservice. In publishing the comments I may have given the impression that that kind of behaviour is acceptable.

Comments can still be added to any post, but the poster will have to log in. Of course fake gmail addresses remain an option.

The deadline for the papers is noon on Wednesday. Late papers will have the 2 week penalty applied to them. So a paper that might have got 45 if it were on time, would get 25%. If your second draft was half decent, it might be worth more on time, than a better paper is worth late. So if you miss the deadline make sure you make that calculation before submitting.

Once you've missed the deadline there is no rush. So you should probably ask Colin for his opinion of the old paper, before submitting a new one late.

Turnitin overwrites the old paper, so there's no going back.

update: I have changed the settings on turnitin so that students cannot submit after the deadline. Students who have arranged an extension will still be able to submit by contacting Colin. Student will still be permitted to submit late, but only once I am confident they understand the consequences of their choice.

If you were one of the students who did not get feedback in the first wave of corrections you can ask for an extension of up to Friday at noon by sending an e-mail to Colin before Wednesday. However it's a good idea to get the paper in by the regular deadline of noon on Wednesday, so that you can get on with other things.

The Turnitin settings for this assignment have been changed so that students can see their own originality reports. This allows students to see the same report Colin will see. That's probably a mistake, because some students will spend lots of time trying to game the system, instead of actually writing. For example, one student changed "New York" to "the Big Apple" in an attempt to disguise copied text.
