We went to C128 for the first hour and I talked students through what was required for assignment 2 again.
In the second hour some students worked in the lab on the assignments. I met with some and we discussed the assignments.
I asked students who will be submitting essays to sign-up for the class on TurnItIn.com

COMP6023 Feedback - How am I driving?
We are at roughly the half-way point of the semester. I would be interested in getting student feedback on the module. I will open the comments on this blog to anonymous comments for a few days. That hasn't gone well in the past, but I will give it another go.
Comments don't have to be anonymous. But if you want to leave a comment anonymously make sure you are logged out of Google before you submit it. Comments will be moderated, but I hope to publish all of them.
Try to make the distinction between the module, the delivery of it, the assessment of it, and the lecturer. Students often merge all of these concepts.
So any comments, suggestions, or recommendations you might have are welcome. Just leave a comment on this post.

Please identify the week of your blog post
When posting please identify the week about which you are posting. That makes it much easier for me to award the marks you are due. It also allows for the possibility of my being slightly flexible with the deadline.
Also please the format of the dates so that it says the date of the post, rather than "2 days ago" for example.

COMP6023 Class 11 DWEB/ITM
We moved the class to C128 so I could talk students through the Photoshop needed to complete Assignment 2. It was a bit crowded, but any students that wanted to stay and work after I was done talking were able to find machines. Most students stayed for a second hour, to get more of it done.

COMP6023 Lab 06 DCOM
Attendance was sparse but that's not surprising since I had a meeting for the first hour. And those who stayed were't especially well rewarded because we didn't do anything in particular.
I worked with some students on their GOMC campaign.

COMP6023 Assignment 2 Podcast
Over the next few weeks I will go though the image coding theory that students need in order to complete Assignment 2 well. However I have assembled a subset of recordings from another module (COMP6021) in which these issues were covered. Students keen to make a start should subscribe to the podcast in iTunes using this url: http://mcom.cit.ie/staff/computing/cmanning/comp6021/comp6023.xml

I met with each student and gave feedback on his blog posts to date.
I showed students how to use Photoshop to save files for the web. Students will need Photoshop in order to complete Assignment 2. Students can download a 30-day free trial from Adobe.com or use the machines in C128.
I asked students to get to grips with the Page authoring tool in blogger.

We didn't do anything particular in today's lab. I used the time to meet with each student and give each one feedback the blog.
Feedback on Student Blogs
This week I used lab time to meet with students to give individual feedback on the blogs. Most students are doing fine. But it's really important to re-read your posts, ideally a day later, to check them for typos and errors.
Here are some common errors and things to watch for
i: The first person is always upper case. Even when it's not at the start of a sentence.
': Many people struggle with the apostrophe rule in English. This site might help. Punctuation makes the difference knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit.
s/he: English is inherently sexist. Most attempts to address this problem have been clumsy. S/he is just ugly. Saying he or she and his or hers (interestingly it's never hers or his) is tedious. Saying he or saying she is fine. It might be an idea to switch the sex from time to time, so long as you don't change any individual's sex mid paragraph. Using the non-gender specific plural, when a singular is required, is wrong too. More dangerous is real sexism. When writing don't assume that all brain surgeons and athletes are male, and all primary school teachers are female.
Proper nouns: All proper nouns in English are capitalized. e.g. Google
Singular vs. Plural: Apple is a company. It has policies. It has products and services. It is singular.
Copyright is usually singular. Copyrights is probably wrong. I'm not sure.
Avoid "me" "you" "we" "the author" "the reader"
Any errors in this post are obviously here for irony.

I couldn't get the projector working so we went to C128 to do some PhotoShop. But it was occupied.
I used the time to meet with some students who weren't in the lab yesterday to discuss how their blogs are going.
