COMP6023 Assignment Spec updated

I have made minor changes to the spec that dealt with the instructions for how to get your Assignment 2 images. So it's less confusing now.

The spec is up to Version 4 now. So if you are working from an older one it might be worth a look. But there have been no substantial changes.

Students submitting as essay for Assignment 3 should register with turnitin.com

Over the next few weeks I will go though the image coding theory that students need in order to complete Assignment 2 well. However I have assembled a subset of recordings from another module (COMP6021) in which these issues were covered. Feedback on Student Blogs

This week I used lab time to meet with students to give individual feedback on the blogs. Most students are doing fine. But it's really important to re-read your posts, ideally a day later, to check them for typos and errors.

Here are some common errors and things to watch for

i: The first person is always upper case. Even when it's not at the start of a sentence.

': Many people struggle with the apostrophe rule  in English. This site might help. Punctuation makes the difference knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit.

s/he: English is inherently sexist. Most attempts to address this problem have been clumsy. S/he is just ugly. Saying he or she and his or hers (interestingly it's never hers or his) is tedious. Saying he or saying she is fine. It might be an idea to switch the sex from time to time, so long as you don't change any individual's sex mid paragraph. Using the non-gender specific plural, when a singular is required, is wrong too. More dangerous is real sexism. When writing don't assume that all brain surgeons and athletes are male, and all primary school teachers are female.

Proper nouns: All proper nouns in English are capitalized. e.g. Google

Singular vs. Plural: Apple is a company. It has policies. It has products and services. It is singular.

Copyright is usually singular. Copyrights is probably wrong. I'm not sure.

Avoid "me" "you" "we" "the author" "the reader"

Any errors in this post are obviously here for irony.

I talked a little bit about local search and we looked at the advanced search options that search engines provide.

Afterwards we spent some time discussing the GOMC and the essay. I outlined where students should be at this stage.

COMP6023 Lab 05 DNET

I met with each students and discussed his or her blog entries. I identified the kinds of errors (if any) each student was making and the kinds of things each student was doing well. I also identified what was required to get more marks.

I was missing printouts for 4 students. I will try to get back to those soon.

While waiting most students worked on this week's blog entry and on the GOMC. I do not have up to date information on the GOMC. Please check the list of teams ad companies and advise me of any changes I need to make.

I met with each student and discussed the kinds of grammar and spelling errors each was making and explained what each could do to improve his mark in the blog.

Extras (suggestions):

Consider what Google might know about you. If you committed a crime and the police had access to Google's database, what might the profile of the criminal look like.

Consider how this semester has gone for you so far. Did you get off to a good start? Did any of the bad practices that you forswore over the break, return? It's usually about Week 05 that students start to drift. Maybe you could think (and write) about why you are at college, what you are interested in, and where you want to go.

I fielded some questions about assessments and some GOMC groups used the time to make some progress.

I met with each student to discuss the blog and the kinds of spelling and grammar errors that the student was making. Some students expressed concern that the penalty for grammar and spelling errors is so significant.

We didn't do very much in today's lab. Some students caught up on work from last week. I asked students to use the time to make sure that the spelling and grammar in the blogs were correct.

I posted the assignment schedule online and we discussed that a little bit.

Students made a simple site and uploaded it to praxis.
