Register for the Google Online Marketing Challenge

COMP6023 students should form groups of 3-6 students (I recommend 4) and one student from each group should register for the Google Online Marketing Challenge http://www.google.com/onlinechallenge/register.html.

Registration was supposed to be open from today but there seems to be some delay.

The student that registers should also set up a blog for the group and make the other team members authors also.

COMP6023 Class 05 DWEB/ITM

We looked a collage and how new works can be created from old ones, and the challenges this poses for copyright law. We discussed open source, creative commons, and public domain. We listened the The Avalanches, ray Charles, Kanye West, and Girl Talk.

Question of the Day

Would you give a job to a man who wrote his CV in Comic Sans?

Web Filter

IT Services is trialling a new web filtering system called LightSpeed. It has come across a few students who say they cannot access legitimate websites that would use in labs and for research.

Some of these websites are being blocked by LightSpeed because of the *category* they are in. I.e. “Security” “Adult” etc. If you come across such websites during your labs or lectures could you please e-mail Servicedesk@cit.ie with the website and the *Category* it was blocked under.

This will allow IT Services to relax the rules a bit hopefully and allow the students to conduct their business unimpeded.

COMP6023 Lab 03 DCOM

I asked each student to check the list of blogs to see if the link to his or her blog is correct.

I asked each students to read the 10 blogs after his or hers in the list and to leave a comment on each. If there are any typos, spelling, or grammar mistakes leave a comment for the author.

COMP6023 Class 05 DWEB/DCOM

We talked about creating new works from old, and open source. We listened to some music (Kanye, The Avalanches, Girl Talk) that contained samples and considered what might be reasonable and what might not.

COMP6023 Peer Review

I sent this mail to everyone in the class:

Hi

Please check that the URL I have for your blog is correct.

This week in the labs I will be asking you to read the 10 blogs that come after yours on the list and to leave a comment on each. In particular if you see a typo, spelling error, or grammar mistake, please let the blog author know. Such errors would cost a lot of marks.

I'll ask you to do this in the labs, but the sooner everyone makes a start, the sooner everyone will get the feedback they need.

If your blog is set up in such a way that readers can't leave comments, you might miss out on valuable feedback.

Good Luck

COMP6023 Class 04 ITS

We looked again at copyright and considered collage and making new works from old. We listened to Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalanches and Stronger by Kanye West, and discussed how the nature of the use was different. Someone said that Daft Punk sued Kanye West and lost, but I don't know that that's the case.

Check your blog

I sent this e-mail to all my COMP6023 students today.

Hi

I have sent this to everyone in the class. That you received it is not an indication that there is anything wrong.

Whoever I would like to to check that you have your blog set up, and that I have your URL on the list on my blog.
http://colinmcit.blogspot.ie/p/comp6023-student-blogs.html

Please check that any nonsense posts that you made to test it are deleted and that all of your posts are in standard correct English. If you have spelling or grammar mistakes you will score very poorly. It is possible to edit posts you have already made.

The deadline for getting your first entry posted covering weeks 1 & 2, is noon of next Monday.

Good Luck

Colin M

Google Online Marketing Challenge

I will be asking students to sign up next week for the Google Online Marketing Challenge. Groups will be of 3 to 6 students and only one of the students should register. You don't need to do anything just yet. I will talk you through the process. In the meantime though you could take a look at

I talked student through how to set up a blog and customize the layout.

I discussed a bit about what students are expected to do each week.

I asked students to e-mail the URLs of their blogs, and to check the list of student blogs on my blog to ensure that I have it and that it is correct.
