SOFT6007 WEB Lab 3

We looked at how to include images in a page using the img tag. I asked student to download images and add them to their webpages.

I asked students to join Google+ and to add me to one of their circles.

SOFT6007 WEB Lab 02

We looked at
heading tags (h1, h2, h3)
links to other sites
links between pages

I asked students to build a few web pages and add links between them, along with links to other sites.

Most students got to grips with that before we moved on.

COMP6023 Class 01

I talked a bit about the module, but the assessment schedule is still a bit up in the air. I told students that it was likely that they would be working in groups of 3 and so they should have a think about that. I asked students to dust off their blogs because they are going to need them again for this module.

I talked about web hosting services and we looked at the unix commands that one might need in order to FTP files up to a web server.

SOFT6007 WEB Lab 1

Very poor audio quality!

We discussed some admin stuff like timetables and class groups

We looked at an example of a webpage written in HTML and students made a webpage using notepad++.

video: SOFT6007-01-WEB-20120917.m4v

SOFT6008 Class 03 COM

We looked at how to generate random numbers in a chosen range and how to build up an image tag using document.write

I asked students to upload the work to dropbox once completed.

code:
javascript2-random-image.html

slides:
soft6008-01b.pdf

recording: Class 03 COM

SOFT6008 Class 02 COM

I introduced JavaScript and we looked at an example program.

I asked students to type it so they could get used to the text editor and the debugging tools. Students should investigate the text editor and debugger options available for their home machines.

code:
Time Based Greeting javascript1-time-based-greeting.html

slides:
soft6008-01b.pdf

recording: Class 02 COM

SOFT6008 Class 01

I was very impressed that most students managed to find the class and be there on time. For the 0900 class on Day 1 that was no easy thing.

I talked briefly about the module and the assessment schedule.

There was no technology in the room so we didn't do anything very interesting. I hope that in time we will be assigned more suitable accommodation.

I asked students to add me to one of their circles in Google+ and to share a dropbox folder with me.

Academic Learning Centre Summer Times

The Learning Support Centre's Summer Programme 2012 will commence on 16th July 2012 and run for four consecutive weeks. Details of the Summer Programme 2012 can be found at the following link: www.cit.ie/learningsupportcentre .   Subject support sessions in Maths, Physics, Programming and Electronics will be delivered during the programme free of charge . Students across all courses who are required to sit the Autumn Repeat Exams in the subject areas above are welcome to attend. Students will be notified in due course via email following the exam results processing.   I would also like to inform you that the Learning Support Centre will be renamed the Academic Learning Centre over the summer. This new name was agreed and confirmed with the Learning Resources Committee, the Department of Mathematics and the Academic Council. The email address and website address will change to academiclearning@cit.ie and www.cit.ie/academiclearningcentre respectively. However both the existing addresses and new addresses will co-exist for a while.

SOFT6007& SOFT6008 Feedback

In the course of correcting submissions for SOFT6007 and SOFT6008 I made some notes. These were primarily notes for myself and the other internal examiners, however they may also provide some useful feedback. I have copied these files to the dropbox students shared with me earlier in the semester. The notes will probably give students some idea why you got the mark you did, when you eventually get your results. I would advise against trying to divine your mark from the notes as the marking is an ongoing process and is not a done deal yet by any means. However the notes do represent the premises on which the mark will be based.

I have also copied to the dropbox each audio recording I made when we met (if I have it).

My copies of the recordings will be deleted soon after the deadline for appeals has passed, except in the case of students who appeal. For students who appeal the recordings will form part of the assessment material. But they too will be deleted in due course.

I have severed the link between my dropbox and the students'.

SOFT7001 Autumn Repeats

Every student I have met who needs to repeat this module has expressed an interest in getting it done and dusted before the summer break.

The specification is largely the same, but students must make a new site. Fixing the old one is not enough.

Make sure you are registered for the repeat. The spec is over there --->
under pages.

I'm happy to look at drafts and give feedback.

Teaching Naked Discussion

I hosted a discussion on Teaching Naked & the Inverted Classroom this morning. Everyone who attended was very keen on the idea, but they thought that CIT students would find it very hard to take on the degree of responsibility required.

SOFT6007 ITS1/DCOM1 Class 32 DCOM1 Lab

Some students used the time to finish up their assignments.

I used some of the time to meet with students. Double-jobbing I know, but I'm keen to make progress.

This was the last class of the module. I am always disappointed by the way in which all that hard work doesn't culminate in some sort of momentous event, and merely fizzles out. Modules should end with a bang, not a whimper.

SOFT6007 COM1 Class 32 Lab A

Some students handed up by 1600.

My machine's battery was low so I had to go back to my office.

I copied over the dropbox at 1700.

If you submitted by 1600 but did work before 1700, and want me to use the dropbox version instead let me know.

SOFT6007 COM1 Class 32 Lab B

Poor turnout. Some students handed up in person.

I'll take the rest from the dropbox at 1700.

SOFT6007 COM1 Submissions

I had to return my machine to its power supply. If you'd like to submit in person please come to my office in C123c.

Otherwise I will copy over the files from the dropboxes at 1700. Please leave enough time for syncrhonization.

SOFT6007 No classes next week

I will be using class time next week to meet with students to review their assignment submissions. So we won't be having classes.

It's been a pleasure doing business with you.

Good luck with your other assessments and exams

SOFT6007 No Class Tomorrow

There will be no lecture this Friday at 0900

SOFT6008 No more classes

I will be using class time from now on to meet with students to review their assignment submissions. So we won't be having classes.

SOFT6007 ITS1 Class 32 ITS1 Lab

SOFT6007 Calculations

Hi ***

The maths is not as bad as your calculations suggest.

Assignment 1 is worth 20%
Assignment 2 is worth 40%
Assignment 3 is worth 40%

If you get x% for 1, y% for 2 and z% for 3

your final mark will be

x*.2 + y*.4 + z *.4

If you submit assignment 3 up to 1 week late your final mark would be

x *.2 + y*.4 + (z-10)*.4

SOFT6007 SOFT6008 Late Penalties

If you don't get the assignments done to your satisfaction and don't meet the minimum requirements by the deadline, you have the option (as with any assignment at CIT) of submitting up to 1 week late for a penalty of 10%. This penalty is subtractive. Work that would have earned 55% if on time, would get 45% (not 49.5%) if late. The penalty is applied weekly. So 1 day late costs the same 6. If you want to take that option please let me know. Otherwise I will just correct whatever I have.

SOFT6007 ITS1/DCOM1 Class 31

We had a lab instead of a lecture. Overcrowding doesn't seem to be a problem.

SOFT6007 SOFT6008 Assignment Reviews

During the assignment review I will just ask you about your assignment and the design decisions that you made. If you didn't get everything working to your satisfaction, but feel like you know more than in reflected in your submission, the review is your chance to increase your mark. Conversely, however, if you are unable to explain well the code you wrote, it may have a negative impact on your mark. Not signing up for any meeting slot, will very seriously impact on your mark.

Those meetings will be in my office C123c.

If you are first on the list try to be there from 5 mins past.
Second on the list from 15 mins past. Third on the list from 30 mins past. Fourth on the list from 40 mins past.

They shouldn't take that long and are noting to worry about. If you didn't get everything done that you had liked, be prepared to draw attention to and example what you would have done.

 Recordings

I propose to record my meetings with each student and have these recordings form part of the assessment material.

Each student may:
Decline to have me make a recording.
In such cases my notes made during and immediately after the meeting will form part of the assessment material
Allow me to make a recording, but change his/her mind afterwards.
In such cases I will keep the recording for up to 24 hours in order to make notes. These notes will form part of the assessment material. The recording will be deleted.
Allow me to make a recording
The recording will form part of the assessment material.
All assessment material may be shared with members of the Module Exam Board (MEB) that awards the mark. In due course all the assessment material will be destroyed/deleted.

SOFT6008 Class 31

We had our final lab. The assignment is due at 1630. Some students handed up via USB stick, but the majority want me to just pick it up from the dropbox.

SOFT6007 COM1 Class 31

We had a lab in IT2.2 instead of a lecture.

SOFT6007 Assignment 2 Spec update

I removed the 5 page constraint for the Assignment 2 website.

SOFT6007 COM1 Class 29 Lab A

Some students viewed their scripts for Assessment 1. Students worked away on their assignments. The ones I saw looked good.

SOFT6007 SOFT6008 Assessment Meetings

Students who
have had poor attendance at labs
did not set up their dropbox on time
have not been updating their dropbox regularly
should expect me to contact them after the submission date in order to arrange a time for them to come meet me to discuss they implemented the projects. The meetings should take about 15 minutes each and will form part of the assessment process. I plan to meet very student taking the module.

Any students who feels that his/her submission does not fully reflect his/her level of understanding is welcome to request such a meeting also. And it will form part of the assessment process. A student might want to that if he/she had something go wrong at the 11th hour. Or if he/she knows a good bit about the course content, but somehow that wasn't reflected in the submission.

SOFT6007 COM1 Class 29 Lab B
