COMP6023 Class 03

We went home. We did well to get as much done as we did given the constraints.

COMP6023 Class 02

We uploaded a file to a web server using the web interface but couldn't get the FTP to work. [You can't FTP across CIT's wifi for security reasons]

I talked a bit about content management systems (CMSs)

SOFT6007 WEB Lab 3

We looked at how to include images in a page using the img tag. I asked student to download images and add them to their webpages.

I asked students to join Google+ and to add me to one of their circles.

SOFT6007 WEB Lab 02

We looked at
heading tags (h1, h2, h3)
links to other sites
links between pages

I asked students to build a few web pages and add links between them, along with links to other sites.

Most students got to grips with that before we moved on.

COMP6023 Class 01

I talked a bit about the module, but the assessment schedule is still a bit up in the air. I told students that it was likely that they would be working in groups of 3 and so they should have a think about that. I asked students to dust off their blogs because they are going to need them again for this module.

I talked about web hosting services and we looked at the unix commands that one might need in order to FTP files up to a web server.

SOFT6007 WEB Lab 1

Very poor audio quality!

We discussed some admin stuff like timetables and class groups

We looked at an example of a webpage written in HTML and students made a webpage using notepad++.

SOFT6008 Class 03 COM

We looked at how to generate random numbers in a chosen range and how to build up an image tag using document.write

I asked students to upload the work to dropbox once completed.

code:
javascript2-random-image.html

slides:
soft6008-01b.pdf

recording: Class 03 COM

SOFT6008 Class 02 COM

I introduced JavaScript and we looked at an example program.

I asked students to type it so they could get used to the text editor and the debugging tools. Students should investigate the text editor and debugger options available for their home machines.

code:
Time Based Greeting javascript1-time-based-greeting.html

slides:
soft6008-01b.pdf

recording: Class 02 COM

SOFT6008 Class 01

I was very impressed that most students managed to find the class and be there on time. For the 0900 class on Day 1 that was no easy thing.

I talked briefly about the module and the assessment schedule.

There was no technology in the room so we didn't do anything very interesting. I hope that in time we will be assigned more suitable accommodation.

I asked students to add me to one of their circles in Google+ and to share a dropbox folder with me.

A number of students submitted work over the summer. I want to meet each student to go through the submissions.

I believe that I have contacted all the relevant students at this stage. If you submitted something but haven't heard from me, please e-mail me.

In the meantime you should sign up for a meeting slot at

SOFT6008 stats

Some people were interesting in the stats for the module. I don't think they are very useful, but here they are anyway. This chart doesn't include 2 results that were withheld.

Academic Learning Centre Summer Times

The Learning Support Centre's Summer Programme 2012 will commence on 16th July 2012 and run for four consecutive weeks. Details of the Summer Programme 2012 can be found at the following link: www.cit.ie/learningsupportcentre .   Subject support sessions in Maths, Physics, Programming and Electronics will be delivered during the programme free of charge . Students across all courses who are required to sit the Autumn Repeat Exams in the subject areas above are welcome to attend. Students will be notified in due course via email following the exam results processing.   I would also like to inform you that the Learning Support Centre will be renamed the Academic Learning Centre over the summer. This new name was agreed and confirmed with the Learning Resources Committee, the Department of Mathematics and the Academic Council. The email address and website address will change to academiclearning@cit.ie and www.cit.ie/academiclearningcentre respectively. However both the existing addresses and new addresses will co-exist for a while.

SOFT6007& SOFT6008 Feedback

In the course of correcting submissions for SOFT6007 and SOFT6008 I made some notes. These were primarily notes for myself and the other internal examiners, however they may also provide some useful feedback. I have copied these files to the dropbox students shared with me earlier in the semester. The notes will probably give students some idea why you got the mark you did, when you eventually get your results. I would advise against trying to divine your mark from the notes as the marking is an ongoing process and is not a done deal yet by any means. However the notes do represent the premises on which the mark will be based.

I have also copied to the dropbox each audio recording I made when we met (if I have it).

My copies of the recordings will be deleted soon after the deadline for appeals has passed, except in the case of students who appeal. For students who appeal the recordings will form part of the assessment material. But they too will be deleted in due course.

I have severed the link between my dropbox and the students'.
